Abstract
The ability to come up with and put into action new ideas is one of the most crucial things that gives 21st-century businesses a competitive edge. But CEOs don't always support behaviors in their employees that are important for creativity. We include current research on the essential components that operate as precursors to innovation, such as employee voice and information exchange, which subsequently foster creativity and innovation. We provide evidence-based suggestions for managers to become leaders in innovation based on current research. These suggestions include: (1) establishing the right group norms, (2) strategically designing teams, (3) managing interactions with people outside the team, (4) showing support as a leader, (5) showing support from the organization, and (6) using performance management effectively. # Kelley School of Business, Indiana University, 2018.
