Abstract

As corporate boards talk about "sustainability" more and more, it's important to look into what drives sustainability. Most methods for figuring out what makes businesses sustainable have looked at either internal or external factors. This article seeks to provide a comprehensive view on several corporate sustainability drivers to facilitate a transition from the unsustainable status quo to a more sustainability-focused paradigm. We got real data from experts and corporate executives. The results indicate that, internally, leadership and the business case are the primary drivers, but outside, reputation, consumer needs and expectations, and regulation and law are the most significant factors. The study suggests a model for business sustainability drivers that takes into account both internal and external factors and adds drivers that link them. This gives a complete picture of how businesses should take greater initiative in their efforts to become more environmentally friendly. Copyright 2013 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. and ERP Environment
