Abstract

Examining the characteristics of sustainability drivers becomes essential as corporate boards talk about "sustainability" more and more. Internal or external factors have been the focus of the majority of company sustainability initiatives. The purpose of this article is to better catalyze the transition from the unsustainable status quo to a more sustainable-oriented state by offering a more comprehensive view of the many corporate sustainability drivers. Experts and business executives provided empirical facts. The results indicate that the most significant external drivers are reputation, consumer wants and expectations, and regulations and laws, whereas the most significant internal drivers are leadership and the business case. The study suggests a driving model for business sustainability that takes into account both external and internal factors and adds drivers that link them. This provides a comprehensive viewpoint on how businesses should take the initiative to become more sustainability-focused. Copyright © 2013 ERP Environment and John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
