Using Social Media to Raise Public Health Awareness Among Pharmacy Students

Abstract
Introduction: To elucidate pharmacy students’ opinions about a unique pedagogical activity designed to explain the notion of public health and its connection with pharmacy. Method: Students in the Elements of Public Health class were to take at least one photo that showed how public health affects their homes or communities. They got a Spanish This is Public Health campaign sign that they were to use to make a post on their own Facebook pages. At the conclusion of this exercise, students filled out a short survey about how they felt. Results: The This is Public Health campaign helped students understand public health ideas and how they relate to pharmacy. Additionally, using this pedagogical approach heightened their interest and drive about public health subjects. Students recognized the use of social media as an effective means of disseminating health information to their connections. Conclusions: Innovative teaching tactics may encourage pharmacy students to learn more about their participation in public health initiatives. As children grow up in a more tech-savvy world, public health teachers need to combine new tactics with traditional teachings and activities.
