Abstract

The self-treatment of certain disorders under the supervision of a pharmacist offers a method by which the objective of lowering healthcare expenditure may be achieved, which is necessary for the long-term viability of the global healthcare system. The purpose of this article is to provide an explanation of global healthcare trends that impact self-care, with a particular emphasis on the role that pharmacists play in facilitating the management of over-the-counter (OTC) medications. The possible financial advantages to the healthcare industry that may be connected with the self-care paradigm are discussed. Furthermore, the significance of the cooperation between healthcare professionals (HCPs), which include specialists, primary care physicians, and pharmacists, is examined. The position of the pharmacist is undergoing changes, and ideas are made on how to effectively interact with customers and other healthcare professionals in order to make the most of the pharmacist's distinctive credentials and the ease with which they may be accessed in the community. By utilizing the management of frequent heartburn with an over-the-counter proton-pump inhibitor as a model, this study will discuss the critical role that pharmacists play in the self-treatment of patients who are experiencing certain symptoms. The study will be based on the World Gastroenterology Organization's recently published guidelines for the community-based management of common gastrointestinal symptoms. Pharmacists are at the forefront of these developments because self-care is projected to play an increasingly important role in the treatment of some minor disorders as the global healthcare system continues to improve. Pharmacists have the ability to advise people on how to make healthy lifestyle decisions, prescribe suitable over-the-counter drugs, and inform customers on when it is necessary to seek medical advice from a physician.
