Abstract

This photo essay examines the complex practices of Siddha pharmacy in Tamil Nadu, India, as recorded during field study at the Puttu Maharishi Ashram in Vellore. The article also looks at how photography may be used as a research instrument, in this case to record moments and processes in Siddha medicine that can't be described in words. The emphasis is placed on two important practices: Pudam, a meticulous calcination procedure essential to the preparation of medicine, and Velvi, a full moon fire ceremony representing the spiritual aspect of Siddha practice. These activities are important parts of building and expressing the Siddha medical tradition. They show how material and spiritual aspects work together in a unique way. The picture essay gives us a look inside the world of Siddha pharmacy, letting us fully feel it’s beautiful and life-changing parts. Photography is used not just as a documentary instrument but as a conduit for inter subjectivity, encouraging readers to interact with the nuanced complexities of this ancient healing technique. The essay's goal is to make the spiritual aspects of Siddha treatment that are usually hidden clear.
