Abstract

Few treatments have considered all chronic illnesses from a patient's standpoint. This research examines medication compliance variables and solutions for individuals with at least one chronic disease. Methods: A hospital pharmacy, four community pharmacies, patient organizations, and a Barcelona primary care centre recruited patients. Five focus groups (36 participants) were held. Conversations were recorded and transcribed verbatim for qualitative analysis. Results: Patients had 2.3 (range 1–7) comorbidities and were 39–90 years old (mean 65). Patients' health beliefs, patient–prescriber connections, motivation, and illness control perceptions influenced therapeutic behavior. Study participants sought more health decision-making and medication education. They also desired personalized treatment that included their interests and emotional difficulties.

Conclusion: Our findings show how the patient–prescriber connection, health attitudes, motivation, and disease control affect chronic patient medication adherence. Next-generation treatment adherence strategies should include collaborative decision-making and health education. Company funding: Celgene.
