Abstract

Urban growth and the increasing rate of industrialization have raised the global temperature over time, which has disrupted the equilibrium of agro-ecological ecosystems around the globe. Therefore, new environmentally friendly agricultural techniques are required for the production of sustainable food. By the conservation of moisture, reducing evaporation of soil, regulating the temperature of the soil, inhibiting growth of the weeds, and enhancing microbial activities, mulching may be able to achieve the desired results. Mulches may also benefit agriculture and landscaping from a financial, aesthetic, and environmental standpoint. Mulches are also frequently used in restoration sites for planting trees that require little maintenance. Mulches fight against various stress situations in both agricultural lands and landscapes. This paper is focused on the numerous important effects of mulching for the establishment and growth of various crops in nature.

There are discrepancies regarding mulching substances because some investigators support the use of mulches while others have expressed some issues. Mulching protects the soil water content, improves the soil's nutrient composition, reduces erosion damages, controls weed growth in agricultural crops, as well as eliminates pesticide, manure, and heavy metal residues. Mulches raise the aesthetic and financial value of agricultural landscapes. Regarding the type of crop, management techniques, and climatic conditions, the choice of mulching material is crucial. The agro-ecological systems could gain the aforementioned advantages from the proper mulching technique. Therefore, it is important to investigate the effects of inexpensive, environmentally sustainable, and biodegradable mulching components on soil microorganisms, nutrient composition, plant development, as well as soil degradation.
